communicateThe thought of having a stranger come into your or your loved one’s home to provide home care can be, perhaps, a bit intimidating.  Working with professional Caregivers should not be more problematic than helpful.  One of the best solutions for this is good & effective communication between the family and the Caregivers.  Both must openly share their needs and concerns while working together to provide the most comfortable and safe environment for the family’s loved one.

Communication in caregiving is as important as knowing how to care. Both Caregiver and care receiver should communicate effectively to ensure the best quality care and comfort.

What can you do to prepare for your loved one’s Caregivers?

  1. Your household environment should be organized and prepared. You should provide your emergency contact information to the Health Care Agency and have a copy on-hand for the Caregiver as well.  Be sure to include all pertinent information about your loved one’s Physician(s), family members and friends.
Perform a walk-through of the house with the Caregiver to show them where all medications, meals, and other daily necessities are located.  The less time the Caregiver must spend learning the environment, the more time they have to focus on your loved one’s needs and keeping them healthy and comfortable.
  2. Professional Caregivers are trained and respectful of the household’s privacy, decisions, and family in every way. Your Caregivers are there to help you and your loved one.  To ensure the best care and attention for your loved one, try to remember that the Caregiver is not there to maintain the household or other family members.  If you need assistance or have questions, try to communicate your needs or concerns as concisely as possible. The Caregiver’s time is valuable and their focus is on your loved one.
  3. Listen to your Caregiver.  He or she will often understand your loved one’s physical needs and mental health as much as you do or better. Your Caregivers are there to help you provide the best possible care for your loved one. They often may have suggestions regarding the care of your loved one that are beneficial to you, your love one, and your family.
